I turned back to it, cautious of cars, and gently picked it up and put it in the grass, tiny feet on the soil.
Why did I turn back?
Why would I be pulled to do this?
Maybe just because it is a living being.
Or, perhaps I was pulled back towards this ugly creature because it represented something to me that was familiar…resonant in the field of life right now.
How many of you feel like you are flailing now? Like you are on your back and your legs are moving in the air trying to find ground? How many of you feel helpless, particularly in the wake of current events? Do you sense you are on the edge of large forces that could run you over and no one seems to want to help you or anyone?
I think this is part of what had me turn back. I felt for this creature, as I feel for all creatures…all of us who are frightened, feeling helpless, ungrounded, and can’t quite get turned towards a way forward.
In this time we MUST help each other. The heat is on and fear is rampant in the streets. Many of us have no clue as to how to help in the large scheme of things…or even how to get our feet solidly on Earth at this time. Turning towards our human compassion is a first step. We must retrieve a kind of radical compassion for the world, the shadow figures in the world and in ourselves, and for others that trigger us.
“If you aren’t outraged you aren’t paying attention” is what the mother of a young woman killed by a car driven by a white supremacist this week, said to a crowd at her funeral. We MUST attend to our outrage with thoughtfulness and not without our compassion and love…even our longing is essential, for our longing informs us of our particular place in the way forward. Violence will only create more violence and pain, but intelligent, compassionate, wise action, can change the world....especially when our souls are entwined in the action.
Pull your legs in and center yourself.
Pull in the threads of a truer reality than the fear broadcasted into our lives.
Feel the Earth and reach your blessed bare feet towards it.
Others will be there to help you find ground.
